While you see plastic or cement try to imitate the look of wood, you rarely see wood products return the favor. Face it – there's not a big market for doug-fir masonry blocks. Wood is the look that people want in siding.
According to CollinsWood's Don Barnes, real wood is also a very practical choice. “Even if we're all the same price on the material, I can save builders some pretty dramatic numbers on the application side,” he said.Barnes points to Collins TruWood Channel Rustic product as an example. “It's a 16-inch wide, 16-foot long product, but it's grooved to look like lap and gap cedar. So you put up what appears to be two 8-inch pieces of a lap and gap cedar at a time, but it goes up with the speed of a wide lap.” That means it can go up as much as 60 percent faster than fiber cement or vinyl. “So you can side 2-1/2 homes in the same time as it would take you to side one home with cement siding,” Barnes figures.
It's also been a quite salable option. Sales of Collins Old Mil Shingle Siding are up over 300 percent from last year. Old Mil is a staggered edge product designed to look like individual hand-split shingles. “The most important thing for builders to know about this product is that it is much more economical than using plastic or cement siding,” Barnes insists.TruWood has a 25 percent recycled content, is supplied pre-primed, and is the only engineered wood siding that offers FSC certification as an available option, which means it qualifies for credit under LEED and other green building programs. It is supplied with a 30-year transferrable warranty.
